KS Completes Another Fun-Filled Staff Retreat
During the week of January 4th through 8th, Kenneth Shuler Schools of Cosmetology closed all of its campuses so that it could conduct training at its headquarters in Columbia.
The goal of the weeklong training session was to better educate, train, and equip employees so that they can serve our students and clients more effectively in the upcoming year.
While the week was filled with training sessions, a visit from Milady representatives, and teambuilding activities, there was also tons of fun to be had! A company awards ceremony was held on Tuesday, January 5th at KS's gorgeous new corporate office. Congratulations to Ms. Irish McCormick for winning the title of Director of the Year and to Ms. Kathleen Stephenson for winning Overall Teacher of the Year.
A special thanks also goes out to Lisha Barnes from Milady for conducting a wonderful teaching session on January 6th and 7th. We know our staff members will take what they've learned and make 2010 the best year Kenneth Shuler has ever had!

KS Campuses Spread Holiday Cheer in 2009
The warmth of giving was felt all over the state during the 2009 holiday season as Kenneth Shuler's staff and students worked to help those less fortunate in their communities.
Each of the campuses chose to work on different service projects that ranged from adopting families for Christmas, hosting bake sales to raise money for "Families Helping Families," and holding toy and gift drives to benefit children in foster care.
We hope our work helped to make the holiday season a little merrier!

KS Puts A New Look on Breast Cancer
As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Kenneth Shuler Schools of Cosmetology hosted makeover contests at each of its five locations. Staff, students, clients, and the general public could nominate either a breast cancer patient or survivor for a complimentary makeover that included such services as a pedicure, manicure, facial, hand massage, hair cut, hair color, and makeup. The events were a HUGE success!
In Columbia, Ms. Karen Murdock was the winner for the Garners Ferry Road school. Ms. Murdock was diagnosed with breast cancer in December of 2008. She underwent chemotherapy and surgery and has now been cancer free for more than four months. She and her granddaughter spent the day being pampered by the Kenneth Shuler staff and when it was all said and done, they were thrilled with their makeover results.
The pair was able to document their experience thanks to a kind donation from Teresa Spires, owner of PhotoSolutions of SC. Ms. Spires gave a free studio session to each of the Columbia winners and offered them prints of their photographs at a very reduced cost.
In addition to the makeover contest, Kenneth Shuler's schools also raised money for local breast cancer organizations during the month of October by selling items such as awareness t-shirts, key chains, coozies, and pumpkins.
A very special thanks goes out to all of the people who helped to support our cause.

The money was raised on March 22 and 23 during a nine and a half hour event called Cuts for Cancer. Students and staff from the St. Andrews Road school donated their time and talents so clients could receive special services like $5 haircuts, mini-manicures, and waxings.
$1500 was raised during the event. Students Combine Time, Talents for Locks of Love
Hair was falling Wednesday, April 22, in the northern portion of South Carolina as students from Kenneth Shuler Schools of Cosmetology and Winthrop University came together to help those less fortunate. The Locks of Love event was held at Winthrop’s Dinkins Student Center and was sponsored by several of the university’s Resident Assistants. Locks of Love is a not-for-profit association that gives qualified children and teens who are struggling from medical-related hair loss high-quality hairpieces, according to their website.
Connie Pruitt, a junior majoring in music education, was one of the event coordinators. She also took the plunge and decided to donate 12 inches of her own hair. This isn’t the first time, though, she’s been chopped.
“I started donating my hair my junior year of high school. Long hair gave me such a self-esteem boost that I thought about others who didn’t have that luxury,” said Connie.
Connie and the other four donators received free haircuts from Kenneth Shuler’s local cosmetology students. They said they were thrilled to be able to donate their high-energy and talents to help such a good cause.
“I have always donated my hair, so I wanted to be on the other side of the chair,” said Kenneth Shuler student Brandi Paul. She added that she’s already looking forward to helping with Locks of Love again.
Kenneth Shuler’s Rock Hill school came into existence in the early part of 2009. The school is currently operating out of the old Plaza School of Beauty Culture, Inc. building on Oakland Avenue, but will be moving to a brand new location at 2383 Cherry Road in just a few weeks.
