Ever walk into a hair salon and wonder why your hairdresser is always in black?
While it may seem so bland for their personalities, the black dress code really does hold a purpose or two.
IT’S ALWAYS IN SEASON
No matter the time of year, black is a timeless color that’ll fit in. No matter the body type or preference in clothing, black works for everyone – plus, you can accessorize it however you want and not have to worry about the clashing of your accessories, hair colors, makeup looks, etc.
BLACK IS NEUTRAL
Ever notice that when you get your hair colored, your stylist tends to stand behind you and look at your hair closely in the mirror in front of you?
There’s a reason behind that method and it’s not just because they want your hair to be perfectly placed (which they do).
When standing behind their client and looking at them in the mirror, because of the black neutral color, it doesn’t alter the perception of the colors near it. Therefore, it shows a truer representation of your hair color.
Wearing other colors might make the hair appear differently because of the light and color in the hair.
CLEAN UP ON AISLE… HAIR
When cutting your hair, you stylist likely is looking at the thousands of hairs that have a mind of their own and are going all over the place.
With the black uniform as their backdrop, it helps the stylist to easily see the hairs that are popping out of place and gives them the contrast to see how the style is coming along.

Imagine you just decided to color your hair with rainbow colors.
Now, you’re stylish is wearing white and while coloring your hair, the color slips from the brush and not only are it now coloring your hair (the intended purpose), but it’s all over your stylists’ white clothing.
There’s no turning back with white and would be hard to remain spot-free with such a light color. With black, the potential of staining the uniform is still possible, but the color would be much harder to visibly stain and it helps to keep your stylist looking professional throughout the day.

Wearing black also allows the stylist to take a step back and not be the center of attention. Wearing a uniform that is black is the perfect backdrop for doing hair, yes, but it also makes the client front and center and all the focus is then on the client.
Imagine you’re wearing a bright color (bright lime green) and you’ve just colored your client’s hair a new fresh blonde. Your client and yourself will take a look at the new blonde color and seeing your shirt next to the hair may not show the true color, which in turn, can make the client feel uneasy.
